Rosary O'Neill

Rosary O’Neill is author of six books, including The Actor's Checklist and The Director as Artist, and 25 plays, including The Awakening of Kate Chopin, Beckett at Greystones Bay, Blackjack: The Thief of Possession, and Degas in New Orleans. Her plays have been produced worldwide and Uncle Victor won a reading at the German Consulate New York in 2011. Her latest novel is Love and Hurricanes.

O'Neill is a Senior Fulbright Drama Specialist for the American Embassy (2013–2018), and a Fellow of the Actors Studio Workshop and Linsey Abrams Advanced Writing workshop. Other recent playwriting fellowships include the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, North Carolina; Norman Mailer House, Cape Cod; the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (Sweet Briar Fellow); and the Sanskriti Foundation Residency Programme near New Delhi, India.

Most recently O'Neill has received fellowships to the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre Centre in Ireland, the Cartouchetie Theatre in Paris, and the University of Cologne, Germany. She is a member of the Actors Studio Playwrights Workshop in New York.

A professor emeritus at Loyola University, New Orleans, O’Neill taught drama and speech for 18 years. During that time she also formed the Southern Repertory Theatre and served as its artistic director for 15 years.
