The Voices of Africa Choral Ensemble is an ensemble of African-American women who play music that spans the African diaspora. In their performances nationwide and abroad, they continually get the same reaction: People rise to their feet to the rejuvenating vibrations of the music, and are moved in spirit, mind, and body. They are dedicated to utilizing music for the purpose of peace, healing, and unity among all people, and believe that we all can use the spiritual power of the African drum to bring peace to individuals and communities.

Now, the Voices of Africa comes to Omega for a heart-altering experience of rich harmonies and blood-boiling rhythm, suited for beginning drummers and singers, as well as those with experience.

The workshop is an educational, inspiring, motivational, spiritual, and healing immersion into the ensemble's unique blend of a cappella vocals in 4- and 5-part harmony, traditional West African percussion instruments, and songs from around the world in various traditions. Experiential sessions are peppered by performances by the ensemble that will move you to the point of ecstasy and leave no one sitting!

Bring a sakara drum, if you have one; sakara drums will be provided to borrow and/or purchase. Participants may also bring their own sekere, agogo bell, or sangba drum. Recommended reading, Hodges, "Drum Is the Ear of God: Africa's Inner World of Music," online at www.bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/rhodges/html/Ear.html.

The Voices Of Africa Choral Ensemble includes Adua Tacheampong, Zakiyyah McKelven, Blanche Baxter, Nyo Agyiriwah, and Nana Akosua Baakan Agyiriwah.
