We are guided by a short passage from the Taittiriya Upanishad, which offers a striking answer. It suggests that at the root of everything—beneath appearances, beneath the world we see and touch, beneath even our own sense of being a separate self—there is something it calls Brahman: infinite consciousness and existence.

Three words, each worth pausing over. Existence points to the sheer fact that anything is at all—the basic "is-ness" that underlies every object, every experience, every moment. Consciousness is that by which we know existence—the awareness in which all experience appears, all knowledge is made possible. And infinite tells us that this reality has no edges, no boundaries, no point where it stops and something else begins. It isn't one thing among many; it is the ground of all things.

The description of this profound inquiry might sound abstract. But the text isn't asking us to believe anything on faith. Nor is it mere metaphysical speculation. It's inviting us to look for ourselves—to inquire into our own actual experience of being aware, of existing, and to see what we find there. Together, we read the passage closely, unpack its key ideas, and pause at points to reflect.
