Liz Bucar

Religion scholar, award-winning author, and yoga teacher Liz Bucar shows what gets lost when spiritual practices are stripped for wellness.

Scholar Liz Bucar explains how the wellness industry has changed the meaning of spiritual and religious practices over time.

Step into the rich religious worlds that gave rise to today's popular wellness practices, and discover how their original meanings can deepen the way we engage with them now. Drawing on her book Beyond Wellness, Liz Bucar reveals how separating yoga, mindfulness, fasting, and food purity practices from their sacred contexts transformed not only their meanings but also their power.

Through vivid stories, guided reflection, small-group conversation, and embodied exercises, you experience these traditions with greater historical depth and ethical clarity. Gain the insight to shape your own practices with deeper intention, integrity, and awareness of the traditions from which they emerge.

Who Should Attend? All are welcome. This workshop is for anyone curious about the deeper histories of wellness practices—from dedicated practitioners and yoga teachers to spiritual seekers and wellness professionals. No background in religion is required, and movement components are gentle and accessible.

What You Experience

With reflection, conversation, and embodied exploration, you develop a more informed approach to your own wellness practices, receive a custom workbook for ongoing reflection, take home a copy of Beyond Wellness, and leave with practices to explore long after the workshop ends.
