The Omega Peace Quilts
Weaving Peace One Thread at a Time

The Omega Peace Quilt is an annual seasonal community project led by quilt artist Helema Kadir.

  • The 2016 Love. Peace Quilt was based on an art project by Regina Cosio, who created an artistic set of postcards each simply with the word "love," followed by a period. Helema Kadir admired the art project and spoke with Regina to incorporate it into the 2016 quilt theme. The 2016 quilt embodies peace through the expression of the word "love" in English, Greek, Russian, Gaelic, Swahili, American Sign Language, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew, Arabic, and even Morse code.

  • The 2015 Celebrating Life Peace Quilt draws on the theme of creating peace through everyday actions such as sharing a wonderful meal, visiting with friends, or being in nature.

  • The 2014 Empowerment Peace Quilt embodies the theme of strengthening peace through creative expression.

  • Set in a deep pink batik background, the 2013 Opening the Heart Peace Quilt is a visual expression of the true peace attained when we open our hearts to ourselves, each other, and the world.

  • The 2012 Rebirth Peace Quilt is inspired by the belief found in many indigenous cultures that the year 2012 was pivotal to the regeneration of the human spirit. The images of this quilt speak of the endless possibilities of creating a refreshed, more peaceful world from the one that existed before.

  • The 2011 Honoring the Divine Feminine Peace Quilt honors the divine feminine in women and men and celebrates the launch of the Omega Women’s Leadership Center.

  • The dynamic interplay of light and dark in the 2010 Transformation Peace Quilt celebrates how we can illuminate and eventually transform the darkness that is inherent in the human experience, and use that path of transformation as a road to inner and world peace.

  • In the 2009 Omega Center for Sustainable Living (OCSL) Peace Quilt, Omega staff used the letters "OCSL" to create phrases that would inspire an image of peace, such as "Our Consciousness Spreading Love," or "Oneness Creates Sacred Laughter."

  • While some of the 88 squares of the 2008 Tarot Peace Quilt resemble traditional tarot images, they all work to create a new story by which we can live—one that embraces peace and love as the highest goals. Julia Butterfly Hill, who contributed to the quilt, said, “Peace, like quilting, is a labor of love.”

  • A gift from staff to honor Omega's 30th anniversary, the 2007 Kaleidoscope Peace Quilt embodies the dynamic process of peace, revealing how peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but a manifestation of the promising possibilities of humanity.

  • The 2006 quilt, called the Mandala Peace Quilt, explores the spiritual and meditative qualities of images, without relying on the traditional mandala form. Composed of 64 quilt blocks and lined with rainbow stripes of color between each row, this quilt is a visual expression of a collective desire for world peace.

  • The 2005 Omega Peace Quilt was created by the Omega community, including seasonal members, faculty, Omega’s cofounder Elizabeth Lesser, and Omega Hermitage resident Julia Butterfly Hill. Community members created squares as visual expressions of the idea, “I have a dream of peace.” Their work also embodied the idea, “We are the quilt.” As they created their squares, they worked to bring peace into the greater world community.
