John Cameron Mitchell is an actor, playwright, screenwriter, singer, songwriter, producer, and director. He wrote, directed, and starred in the musical and film Hedwig and the Angry Inch, for which he won an Obie Award, two Tony Awards, Best Director at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, in addition to 16 other awards. He also directed the improv-based film Shortbus, an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole.

John’s television roles include Girls, Shrill, The Good Fight, Mozart in the Jungle, The Sandman, Yellowjackets, and City on Fire, among others. He also directed episodes of Nurse Jackie, Happyish, and GLOW. John’s fictional podcast series are Anthem: Homunculus, starring Glenn Close, Cynthia Erivo, Patti LuPone, and Laurie Anderson; and Cancellation Island, starring Holly Hunter.

John received the New York State Senate Democrats’ Special Human Rights Award and the Dorothy Hirshon Award for Cinematic Achievement from The New School. He teaches Problemagic Cinema at the University of Michigan.
