7-minute collage by Jane Davies

Learn to make art with ease and confidence using these fun and creative exercises.

Watch Jane Davies showcase the 7-Minute Collage process.

Overcome indecision, hesitation, and fear of wrecking a piece of art in this workshop that focuses on continuity and fluidity. The 7-Minute Collage is just one of the exercises we do that trains your attention and helps you let go of perfectionism. Push through blocks, self-doubt, and second-guessing, and move toward making art with ease and confidence.

Using simple collage, drawing, and painting techniques, we begin with quick exercises, and gradually move to more complex projects as you expand and fine-tune your visual acuity and expression with colorful and surprising images. This workshop is accessible to advanced beginners and beyond. Some experience with acrylic paint and collage is helpful.

Things to Bring

Faculty has provided the following list of art supplies for you to bring to the course:

  • Collage papers, including the following:*
    • Solid colors in a range of values, dark to very light
    • Patterns in a variety of scale—teeny tiny, and great big
    • Tone-on-tone subtle patterns
    • Images (optional) from magazines, photocopies, or other sources, on lightweight paper
    • Type in various sizes (magazine copy to headlines), from discarded books, newspapers, or magazines, or photocopies
  • Uhu glue stick
  • Acrylic matte medium or soft gel
  • Acrylic paints—liquid paints are preferable, such as Golden Fluid Acrylics (not high flow), including craft paints.
  • Palette (I use the disposable, pad of paper style)
  • Palette knife
  • Satin Glazing Liquid, Retarder gel, or Golden OPEN medium or thinner: something that slows the drying of your paints. Any of these three will suffice. Plain acrylic matte medium does not slow the drying.
  • Brushes—in a variety of sizes; I use ½” and ¾” flat brushes and a few round brushes.
  • Drawing tools such as markers, paint markers, water soluble crayons, graphite, fine tip felt pens, pencils, colored pencils, oil pastels, etc.
  • Paper to use as a substrate: smooth medium weight paper is required. Bristol is a good choice, 9”x12” or smaller. Smooth printmaking paper cut down to small squares or rectangles (8”x10”, 9”x12”, or 8” squares are good). 15 small sheets should suffice. Blick Bristol comes in pads of 15 sheets.

Faculty will supply the following items:

  • Collage papers to share
  • Extra glue sticks
  • Drawing tools to share
  • Cheap drawing paper

*You don't need to have a ton of papers in each of these categories but check to see that you have some of each. Most of your papers should be opaque—not tissue paper and deli paper. Include translucent papers sparingly if you like, but don’t rely on them completely. Make sure you have some light value neutral colors – off whites, light grays, sand, beige.
