Theresa S. Thames

Theresa S. Thames is the associate dean of Religious Life and the Chapel at Princeton University. She is the founder of Soul Joy Yoga LLC, an in-person and online gathering that centers womxn and folx of color, inviting them to bring their full divine selves to the mat and tap into radical joy.

Theresa is a graduate of Howard University and received her master of divinity with a concentration in gender, theology, and ministry from Duke University Divinity School. She has a doctorate of ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in leadership excellence which explored how best to equip young clergywomen of color to thrive in ministry. As an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, I served as a local pastor in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for nine years.

Theresa was born and raised in Southern Mississippi, and being a Black woman from the deep south informs her sense of self and the world. Though she is an ordained Methodist pastor, she is more poly-religious when it comes to her desire to understand God’s depth and breadth.
