Man receiving acupuncture
The ancient Greek word for wound is trauma. Simply defined, trauma is a deeply disturbing experience that can create extreme stress and overwhelm the body and the mind.  About 70 percent of U.S. adults have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives and up to 20 percent of these people can also develop post-traumatic stress, according to the nonprofit organization Sidran Traumatic Stress Institute. Kombu broth is so easy it’s almost thoughtless—all you have to do is throw the elements in the pot. This broth is perfect on its own, but will inspire days of creations. You can elaborate upon it by adding cultured vegetables for a warm and chunky soup. You can use it as a base for any puree or soup you make in the blender, you can steam grains in it, or you can steam vegetables in it for a soup. It’s also a great addition to any juice fast you might partake in, over any number of days. More

An Interview With Joan White
Omega: Having studied extensively with both B.K.S. Iyengar and his daughter Geeta Iyengar, what have you observed about the role of women in yoga? Joan: One of Mr. Iyengar’s legacies—we call him Guruji—is that he was the first one that taught men and women in the same class. It had been forbidden, but he broke through a lot of Indian taboos in his introduction of yoga to the West, and now everybody can do yoga if they want to. More
An Interview With Florence Meleo-Meyer
Omega: Can we be mindful or present without knowing it, or is it something we need to practice? Florence: At its core, mindfulness is the innate human capacity to be aware. All human beings come with this capacity to know what’s happening as it’s happening, but we are not trained to access that capacity. It takes continuity and discipline to access what’s already here. This capacity to be aware requires you make a choice to be awake in the present moment with whatever is showing up. More
An Interview With Bizzie Gold
Omega: How did you become an entrepreneur? Bizzie: If I look back at my childhood, I grew up with an “it’s okay to be a boss” mentality. My dad really instilled that in me since I was very young. I can remember being a child and ordering at a restaurant. At four or five, I would have to order for myself and use my manners. My dad always helped me put communication at the forefront of everything that I did. More

I used to think that religious dogma was the outgrowth of fear and unresolved parental issues. Certainly, much modern religion has lost touch with its more mystical roots, but there is no question that what ails the average American, as British writer and journalist Graham Hancock says, is a disconnection from Spirit. Using Illness to Find Wholeness
Every pair of apparent opposite or contradictory symptoms shares a common ground and tends to revolve around a common theme. For example, “letting go” is the central point in the case of both constipation and diarrhea. Underlying both low and high blood pressure is an avoidance of conflict. Just as joy can express itself in tears or laughter, or as fear can lead to either paralysis or flight, every theme is capable of expressing itself in apparently contradictory symptomatic forms.  More
You don’t necessarily have to give up your favorite foods when you are looking to eat better. Sometimes you just need to find a healthier version. This recipe may be the world’s healthiest pizza, according to Jon Gabriel. He says the egg yolks are a more complete protein that contain healthy fats and are easier to digest than other proteins, and the psyllium husk—a form of soluble fiber made from the husks of seeds from a type of plantain—helps bind the crust. Makes 4 10-inch pizzas More

guy sleeping doesn't have willpower to get up
Sticking to our commitments is one of the most challenging things to do. Why is that? Because we have an unreal view of what it means to be human: We like to think of ourselves as finished products, but we’re not. We are actually works in progress. More
