The first time Marshawn Feltus tried yoga was in prison. He immediately felt the physical benefits of the practice, and the mental and spiritual benefits eventually crept up on him, too. He started a prison yoga program that served more than 800 inmates before he was released from prison and returned to his Chicago neighborhood where he created ACT Yoga (for Awareness, Change, Triumph), a community yoga project. Omega: How did you feel when you started practicing yoga and what were some of the changes to your mind and body after months of practice? More

Omega: How has teaching yoga to military members affected the way you teach? Corwin: I probably teach more men than the average yoga teacher, and that’s definitely transformed my teaching style. With women you have to be authentic—we respond to authenticity and to others being open, accepting, and vulnerable. With men I find this to be even truer. If I want to slip in principles of mindfulness or surrender, I have to approach it from a firmly grounded and straightforward place, because that’s where these guys operate. More
Besides brushing your teeth, is there anything you’ve done faithfully, every day, for as long as you can remember? Be honest. (Okay, maybe you’ve skipped a few days of brushing here and there...we won’t tell.) More
Omega: You are the founder and director of the Hard & the Soft Yoga Institute. What is the significance of that name? More
Omega: You are a former neurofeedback researcher with a degree in English and philosophy. How did you first find yoga? More
Omega: What are the main messages women receive about their bodies? Melody: Women are told that our bodies are literally who we are—that we are objects. We are seen, praised, and celebrated for our appearance or denigrated and denied access to certain resources or approval because of our appearance. This messaging is insidious and harmful. It’s a complete illusion, yet it defines our lovability and value, and defines the way in which we could be contributing to the world around us. More
Omega: How has yoga become a tool to help trauma survivors?  More
Omega Institute and the Yoga Service Council have worked together since 2014 to produce a series of Yoga Service Best Practices Guides, including Best Practices for Yoga in Schools (2015) and Yoga With Veterans (2016), and most recently Best Practices for Yoga in the Criminal Justice System (2017). More
Yoga has much to offer people in the criminal justice system, including those who are incarcerated or otherwise system-involved as well as those who work as correctional officers, administrators, or other criminal justice professionals. More
